Gender in Development

The Department is responsible for coordinating, monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the National Gender Policy in order to facilitate gender responsive development.  It is also responsible for mainstreaming gender in all Government Institutions, including the Local Authorities.

The Department performs the following specific functions:

  1. Formulate and review existing policies and National Action Plans from a gender perspective;
  2. Facilitate the formulation and review exiting national legislation in order to ensure gender responsiveness;
  3. Coordinate the implementation of the National Gender Policy;
  4. Ensure domestication of regional and international Legal instruments and provide periodic reports;
  5. Mainstreaming gender issues in all sectors;
  6. Facilitate capacity building for gender mainstreaming in the country;
  7. Coordinate and mobilize resource for implementation of gender equity and women’s empowerment programmes;
  8. Undertake advocacy programmes to mainstream gender into social- cultural issues; and
  9. Promote and Monitor adherence to increasing women’s participation in decision making.

Gender Mainstreaming Section

The Gender Mainstreaming Section is responsible for mainstreaming gender in both the public and private sectors.

The Section performs the following specific functions:

  1. Formulate and review existing policies and National Action Plans from a gender perspective;
  2. Facilitate the implementation of the National Gender Policy;
  3. Mainstreaming gender issues in all sectors;
  4. Facilitate capacity building for gender mainstreaming in the country; and
  5. Promote and monitor adherence to increasing women’s participation in decision making.

Women Economic Empowerment Section

The Section is responsible for uplifting the economic well-being of women through skills development, entrepreneurship training and provision of grants to women groups in order to reduce their vulnerability.

The Section will perform the following specific functions:

  1. Capacity building for skills development;
  2. Coordinate, mobilize and disburse resources for implementation of gender equity and women’s empowerment programmes; and
  3. Raise public awareness on and increased women’s access to the women’s economic empowerment fund for sustainable economic development.
