The Government, in collaboration with the United Nations and the Government of Ireland, has launched a Gender Equally and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) initiative aimed at eliminating Gender Based Violence (GBV) and promotes women’s economic empowerment.
In a speech delivered in solidarity with the agenda, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Gilbert Phiri, who noted the number of defilement cases, said the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), will not go soft on perpetrators of sexual violence, calling for stiffer punishment towards them, in order to deter would be offenders from committing the crime.
Mr Phiri further emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving gender equality and highlighted the National Prosecution Authority’s commitment to fighting GBV. He called for key legislative reforms, including stiffening punishment for GBV perpetrators.
Meanwhile, Gender Division Permanent Secretary, Mainga Kabika, in her speech, expressed gratitude towards the NPA and other significant cooperating partners for their support, including financially to the initiative.
“The Programme will need consented efforts to prevent and eradicate GBV which continues to be a major challenge in the country to ensure a safe and sane community for all.” Ms Kabika emphasized.
Ms Kabika highlighted the need to report all forms of violence each time they manifest, charging that no one should ever be a victim or survivor of violence in the country or anywhere in the world.
