Alleviating Poverty levels and Gender Based Violence through Women Economic Empowerment Program – Ministry of Gender


Government through the Ministry of Gender continue with its mandate to reduce poverty levels and Gender Based violence by empowering Women through the Women Economic Empowerment Program in country.

Recently, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Gender Dr. Sastone Silomba handed over a number of in kind grants in form of assorted   empowerment agricultural equipment to several    cooperatives in western province. The Cooperatives received in kind grants such as cashew Shellers, Solor Batteries, Solar Panel and Rice dehuller.

Speaking at the same event, the Permanent secretary said the Ministry of Gender is delighted to be part of the women economic empowerment Program adventure and that women have the largest population in Zambia owing to that, Government   has realized women have remained behind in terms of development yet they are the majority.

He added that the Ministry of Gender is trying to reduce hunger and wants to see women in agriculture by empowering them with agricultural equipment.Dr. Silomba said western province is the largest Cashew nut producer as it has more than 700 hectares of cashew plantation.

Senanga district is described as one of cashew Hub of western province and ranked the third in terms of cashew potential. Senanga is among other districts in western province that had some of its cooperatives empowered with both agricultural and poultry   equipment.

Speaking at the same handover ceremonies of the agricultural equipment to different cooperatives   in districts; like Mongu, Senanga, Nalolo and Kalabo, District commissioners and cooperative representatives thanked government for the in kind grants given to them stating that, it will go a long way in changing their lives as it is timely and appropriate for them.
